Some videos of basic leatherworking hand tools for beginners

We made these videos years ago, when we were selling tools and fasteners as well as hardware. While we no longer sell either of those, we thought that the videos may still be helpful for beginners, so we brought them out of data mothballs.

The size of the videos is small, but they still get the point across. We hope you find them helpful!

You'll find these below:

Eyelet Setter
Strap Cutter
Strap End Punch

How to Use an Eyelet Setter

Learn how to properly install eyelets using a manual eyelet setter. Explains the tools needed, and also shows correct positioning, hammer technique, and how to avoid common mistakes like crushing the eyelet.

How to use a strap end punch

A strap end punch, belt tip cutter, belt point punch, or however you want to call it is extremely simple to use. The cutters come in various styles, the one we are using here is an English Strap End Punch, however they all work the same, they just make different countours.

The video shows the simple technique, as well as the limited number of tools needed.

How to hand set grommets

Grommets - little two piece "thingies" that will reinforce a hole and produce a finished surface on both sides of an item. Differing from eyelets, which do the same thing, but only have one finished side. This video shows you how, and on what side, and in which direction, to place the two pieces, and set them properly.

How to hand set rivets

Rivets. They hold just about every project together, unless you sew. Simple to use, and will become so frequent that you'll probably be as sick of setting them as we are. The tools and the technique are explained in this very short and simple video.

How to setup and use a strap cutter

If you do strap work (belts, dog collars, purse straps and so forth) this tool is indispensable. We show you how to put it together from the way it is shipped, how to adjust it, and how to properly, and safely use this important tool.

How to hand set snaps

There's a lot of different styles of snaps. All of them are set, basically, in the same manner. Here we show you how to set ligne 24 (no, not a typo, officially "ligne", but you'll often see "line") snaps. The most common type, and the same ones you will usually see on your own clothing. Learn how to set them, the tools you have to use, and be able to set your own, or replace those that have become damaged.
